Introduction

Hey! Let me guide you through your preparations for USMLE. You might want to start right from buying the right materials to what to expect on your test day. Getting organised, being motivated, having consistency, prepared to sacrifice other things would be some of the qualities you might want to instill in you. It is a long journey where no plan sticks right till the end, so instant improvisation should be on your mind.

Basic Introduction

In order to apply for residency in the United States, you will have to obtain ECFMG certification.

ECFMG certification requires:

1. USMLE Step 1 result

2. USMLE Step 2 CK result

3. Approval of authenticity of medical undergraduate diploma (degree) by ECFMG

Programs in the United States do not have a hard and fast rule of recruiting solely on the basis of marks. They would want to know the complete background of the candidate as a medical student/graduate, even as a person (via interviews). Competition has been increasing as each year goes by and candidates must have an impressive resume in order to consider accepting him/her. So additionally, to improve your resume you might want to add one or more of the following to your list:

1. Electives - It is hospital experience in a program United States while you are a STUDENT and have not attained graduation.

2. Research elective: An opportunity to be included in a research program.

3. Observership: Candidates who have completed graduation cannot apply to electives but have to apply to go for observership. It is considered inferior to electives as it has no hands on experience as in clinical electives. However something is better than nothing.

4. Any research (paper/case/poster) or achievements in medical school worth mentioning would improve the resume.

Goal of hospital experience in the U.S., apart from the fact that you can mention it in your resume, is:

1. Letter of recommendations (LOR): It is a letter someone whom you've worked under would write for you which reflects your character and proficiency in a clinical setting.

2. The faculty might recognize you personally when you apply to the same program for residency. One would always prefer a familiar face whose qualifications are equal to those of a completely anonymous candidate.

This should be what you're aiming to accomplish. The journey has started. Go through the following links which will take you through a systematic understanding of the various parts of the journey:
